Prostate Health Check

We offer fast access to prostate tests and results to check for prostate cancer and other prostate conditions. Expert diagnosis and support from specialist consultants in a private urology clinic.

The importance of prostate health

The prostate gland directly impacts two of the most important aspects of male physiology: urinary function and reproductive health.

However, the health of the prostate can start to decline as men get older, especially after the age of 50. This can lead to severe urinary discomfort and chronic pain impacting quality of life, or life-threatening conditions like prostate cancer.

This is why regular prostate health checks are crucial for men over 50 — or over 45 for those at higher risk, such as men with a strong family history of prostate cancer or men of Black ethnicity. Taking a proactive approach to monitoring the health of your prostate increases the chances of early detection of any prostate problems. This early detection significantly improves treatment effectiveness and can reduce the need for invasive procedures.

The Urology Partnership offers fast access to consultant-led prostate tests combining physical examinations, PSA blood tests and advanced imaging in the comfort of our private clinic in Reading.

What prostate problems do our tests detect?

Our series of comprehensive tests will provide a clear picture of your prostate health, allowing you to catch any problems early and protect your long-term health.

The prostate is a compact gland roughly the size of a walnut. Its primary responsibility is the secretion of seminal fluid – the liquid that sustains, protects and carries sperm cells. While the gland is crucial for male fertility, it is also susceptible to a range of medical conditions.

Our prostate tests check for:

  • Prostatitis: Inflammation or infection of the prostate, which can cause pain in the pelvic region, burning during urination, and flu-like symptoms. It may also cause sexual problems, such as erectile dysfunction, pain when ejaculating, or pelvic pain after sex.
  • Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): BPH is non-cancerous growth of the prostate gland which commonly occurs as men age. As it enlarges, it squeezes the urethra, causing problems such as a weak urine stream, difficulty starting or stopping urination, a frequent urge to pee and needing to get up at night to urinate (nocturia).
  • Prostate Cancer: Cancer of the prostate is one of the most common cancers among men. It’s often referred to as the ‘silent disease’ as early stages often present no symptoms – making routine testing essential. Detecting cancer early through regular screening can significantly increase the chances of successful treatment.

When should you get your prostate checked?

Having your prostate checked regularly is a good idea for maintaining good health, highlighting problems early and for your own peace of mind.

When you should start getting your prostate screened generally depends on your age and risk level.

  • Age 50 / Average risk: Men in this category have no known risk factors and are expected to live at least another 10 years.
  • Age 45 / High risk: This includes Black men and those with a first-degree relative (father or brother) diagnosed with prostate cancer.
  • Age 40 / Very high risk: This includes individuals with multiple close relatives diagnosed with the disease at an early age or those carrying genetic mutations (e.g., BRCA1 or BRCA2).

Regardless of your age, you should book an appointment with your doctor right away if you experience any of the following symptoms commonly associated with a prostate problem:

  • Difficulty starting or stopping urination.
  • A weak or interrupted urine flow.
  • Needing to urinate frequently, especially at night.
  • Pain or burning sensation during urination.
  • Blood in your urine or semen.
  • Pain or discomfort in the pelvic region.
  • Erectile dysfunction.

If you have spotted any of the above symptoms or simply wish to start screening your prostate health, book an appointment at The Urology Partnership for fast access to consultant-led prostate tests and accurate results.

Prostate Health Check FAQs

A prostate health check at The Urology Partnership typically includes a consultation with a specialist urologist, a review of your symptoms and medical history, and diagnostic tests such as a PSA blood test and physical examination. Depending on your results and risk factors, further investigations such as ultrasound imaging, MRI scans, urine tests or a prostate biopsy may be recommended.

Most prostate examinations are quick and cause little or no pain. A digital rectal examination (DRE) may feel slightly uncomfortable or unfamiliar, but it typically takes less than a minute to perform. Our experienced consultants prioritise your comfort and dignity throughout the process and discuss if it is really required.

Not necessarily. Elevated PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) levels can be caused by several conditions, including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostatitis, urinary infections and recent physical activity. While a raised PSA level may indicate the need for further investigation, additional tests are required to determine whether prostate cancer is present.

Yes. Early-stage prostate cancer often causes no noticeable symptoms, which is why regular prostate screening is important, particularly for men over 50 and those with higher risk factors. Screening can help identify potential problems before symptoms develop.

Most men should consider regular prostate screening from the age of 50. However, those at higher risk – including Black men and individuals with a close family history of prostate cancer – may benefit from screening from age 45, or earlier in some cases. Our consultants can advise on the most appropriate screening schedule for your circumstances.
